Timothy R. Snyder graduated with a Master of Arts degree in history from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He is the author of two books in the field of U.S. Civil War history, as well as a number of articles. During the Civil War period, the Snyder family lived near or on what would become Antietam Battlefield. Two brothers, cousins of the author, served in the Union army and fought at Antietam, nearly in their own backyard. One of the two was killed at Petersburg on April 2, 1865, only one week before General Robert E. Lee's surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. A third brother fetched a pail of water for President Lincoln and generals McClellan and Burnside during the president's tour of Antietam Battlefield. On his maternal side of the family, the author is second cousin to Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade, who was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. He lives in Hagerstown, MD.
