Summary
Avalon Spy Academy rules: spy on the fey, resist falling for your mentor, and try not to die in the process.
I spent five years saving up for a European vacation. But instead of drinking champagne on the beach, I get swept into a war of espionage between the humans and the fey.
It turns out, I have a magic power needed to fight an evil fey king. I'm quickly whisked off to an elite spy academy in a hidden realm. There, in the ancient and gothic halls of Avalon Tower, snobbery and brutal competitions are among the oldest traditions.
As if I didn't have enough trouble, my new mentor is Raphael Launcelot, a maddeningly sexy demi-fey who already ruined my life once. I can't fall for him again. Romance is forbidden here; a distracted spy is a dead spy. So I need to push his dangerous allure out of my mind as we travel into the Fey realm. If we get captured, we’ll die horrific deaths–and humanity won’t stand a chance.
If you liked Frost and City of Thorns, you will love Avalon Tower.

I think this book is like the meme someone drew, where you have a poor, normal girl, with asthma by the way, who apparently are more pretty than she knows. She's never exercised much and her 2 hobbies are books and languages. She has almost no friends and there's family problems. She suddenly gets shoved into a dangerous situation, she's scared, but miraculously she aces it and then discovers she has magic powers. Trains half a year, but then boom she's the best at everything even though she's not, and then she safes the day.
She also hates a guy, but loves him, but hates him. And all in all it's just another day at the office.
I think this book was way, way overhyped.
And no, it is not a new ACOTAR. It doesn't even come close to the ankles of ACOTAR. So please don't compare them.
An utter Cliché.

Mia is clever, has a good heart and is able to do cool stuff with her magic.
It's a good story and I am looking forward to reading the next book!
The narrator is very good as well! ☺️
Great

I didn’t particularly enjoy the start, but I figured once past the initial scenes and onto the spy academy setting it would improve…it didn’t. Well no that’s not entirely true. It did improve but it just didn’t do anything for me. The FMC is quirky and inner dialogue has some humour the MMC or the narration for the MMC fell flat. It could be the dialogue for him the narrators voice or a combination of both. But rather than come across as moody and distant, it came across as utterly boring. Other than supposedly being devastatingly gorgeous, it was hard to understand the attraction. Where was the yearning, the banter the longing. There wasn’t any of that.
I have never DNF’d a book so finished it on top speed but I bought the following two books and I’m not sure I will go back to them.
Saying that the narrator is good at the side characters and the FMC bringing emotion, and humour it’s just the MMC needs to be appealing or it just doesn’t work, for me anyway.
Not what I was expecting!
