About this listen

The second part of the series from Diana Gabaldon that explores the power of a love that transcends space and time. A magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland....

For 20 years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his....

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart...in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising...and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

Engaging and vivid story. Unfortunately let down by a background noise of chatter or echo, noticeable when listening on phone but less so if listening in car.

Great book poor recording

If you watch the TV series also, listening to the book is like getting Claire’s retelling of what happened. I love the narrator and her approach. Probably wouldn’t buy other books in the series if there was a different narrator.

If you could sum up Dragonfly In Amber in three words, what would they be?

Love, history, action.

What did you like best about this story?

It's not often a book makes me cry, but this had me sobbing! I have been watching the TV series at the same time as I have been listening to the book, and I have to say I am now obsessed with Outlander. Brilliant story, utterly bewitching characters and great storytelling. Finished this book 2 days ago. Was going to give myself a break before going onto the next one but I want to know what happens! So I've already downloaded Voyager.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Great performance (apart from the American accent!). I don't know how she switches from male/female, English/Scots/French so easily!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I think it's too much to take in in one sitting!

Any additional comments?

There was some background noise/echo in some places, and the sound quality is quite rough. Possibly because this recording is now a little old and technology is more advanced. I'm not sure whether this can be cleaned up in any way.

If you love the TV series, you'll love this.

As with the first book I was absolutely hooked.
I enjoyed reading and learning more about the characters.
The story flowed beautifully and the attention to detail was second to none, the author has clearly done her homework.
Would recommend readers read the book before seeing the series on tv .
I am now starting on book three
