What impressed me most was how lyrical the writing is despite the grim setting. Rick McManus paints a bleak world where the climate crisis has unraveled civilization, but somehow still finds space for beauty in the midst of devastation. Eva and Adam’s connection feels sacred, their love story unfolding like a final prayer whispered into a crumbling world. This isn’t just a love story—it’s a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. I was truly moved.

While the early pacing is a bit slow, once “Empty Earth” finds its rhythm, it delivers an incredibly rewarding experience. The buildup of Eva and Adam’s connection is emotionally satisfying and their shared dream of escape becomes the heartbeat of the story. I appreciated the strong environmental themes and the emotional intelligence of the writing. Nettie Rose’s narration is absolutely stellar—she adds texture to every emotion and breathes life into the characters. A little more early tension would have made it a perfect five, but this is still a beautiful, memorable listen.

The world-building in “Empty Earth” is both chilling and immersive. You can feel the cold seeping into your bones as you listen. But what makes this story stand out is its emotional core. Eva is a fierce, layered protagonist whose loyalty and love drive the entire plot. The slow-burn connection between her and Adam is so well done—it grows through whispers, shared memories, and shared pain. A fantastic balance of romance, survival, and suspense.
