Summary

The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

Critic reviews

“Pure science fiction…Arthur Clarke, move over!” (Isaac Asimov)
“Hard science fiction with a lovely vengeance but done so well that almost no scientific background is needed to understand and enjoy it…Highly recommended.” ( Analog)
“Intellectual action portrayed as excitingly as any space war - a truly absorbing read and a reminder that learning is one of the greatest human adventures.” ( Publishers Weekly)

great story I really enjoyed the book, found it slightly hard to follow in places, due to the author going into detail, but I do listen to books while running so could be me. there was a point in the book where I thought I'd lost track of everything but then the last hour wrapped everything up really well. Well worth a listen.

Great story heavy on science

loved it. shame the author was so controversial. but such a great story a very different origin story of humanity. I am looking forward to the next in the series

it was like a mystery puzzle being solved slowly and incorrectly then finally discovered

Great and original concept, well exploited.

The whole story is the unravelling of a scientific impossibility/mystery in several steps of increasing complexity. It is the only focus of the story and the characters only serve to give us conflicting hypotheses and new evidences. There is no particular crisis or character driven developement but it is done well enough and the mystery is compelling enough to make for an exciting read.

The book is well paced, there is a lot of scientific arguments between the characters and I felt invested in and was trying to reason along or against them during the book.

Some parts of the resolution felt far fetched and less fleshed out but overall it was very enjoyable and satisfying in the end.

Overall it’s an invitation to think of a cool « what if » concept whith enough sciency talk in the beginning to get you to consider it and then a bit of fun space dreaming to tie everything up and end it with a satisfying conclusion.

Great Concept Well Developed
