About this listen

In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years? As Smith and his team begin to untangle the threads, one thing becomes clear - they are dealing with some of the most dangerous people that they have yet encountered.

As the fourth of the series this volume might have been repetitious and forgotten about developing the characters. But it’s not. But nor is the investigation really the point of the writing, the exploration of the society of KL and the development of interesting characters is what makes this well worth reading. If you want adventure, read Andy McNab or other such rubbish. If you want an engrossing read then read Peter Grainger.

Meticulous and well-written

Four DC Smith books listened to now in short order which says it all really. Love the main character and the narrator really brings him to life (I quite often laugh out loud).
the stories are enjoyable and for those of us of a certain age may recall a literary and TV character in the UK called Frost brought to Life by David Jason, these stories remind me of a modern version which is probably why I enjoy them.

Can't get enough DC

I’ve only just come across this writer and series but am already hooked. Grainger depicts believable characters, using humour and the right amount of detail to build interest in both them and the overall plot. Many more-established writers struggle to get humour right but I’ve already enjoyed some laugh out loud moments (gaffaws!) amongst the more serious aspects of these stories. Can’t wait for the next…

Engaging, compulsive read

Another excellent book in this series. The main character / detective is amusing, interesting and very likeable. Even better the whole series was free to read.
