About this listen

‘Sharpe and his creator are national treasures.' Sunday Telegraph

Spain, July 1809

Lieutenant Richard Sharpe faces not only great danger on the battlefield but also, even more dangerous, treachery within his own ranks. But as the enemy approaches, he must pick up his rifle and prepare to lead his men against the French at one of the biggest, bloodiest fights of the war – the Battle of Talavera.

Out of the mist comes the roaring, undefeated army sent by Emperor Napoleon. Over their heads soar the Eagles, the standards touched by the hand of the Emperor himself. And boldly waiting for them is Sharpe . . .

‘The best battle scenes of any writer I’ve ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive.’ George R.R. Martin

Would you listen to Sharpe's Eagle: The Talavera Campaign, July 1809 again? Why?

Yes, because it is very good.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Captain Richard Sharpe, of course!

What about Rupert Farley’s performance did you like?

Farley is perfect for the Sharpe novels. His range of accents is astonishing, and his narration is excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

This is the first book Bernard Cornwell ever wrote and it does not show. HE really hit the ground running.

The Original Sharpe

I read the book when it was first published, watched Sean Bean bring Sharp to life, and now I have listened to the audiobook. The story was still stirring stuff, but the narrator wasn’t the best. The narration of the story was fine, but the accents seemed forced and several times the female character sounded very masculine. Despite my pickiness about the narrator it was still a good listen.

Stirring stuff
