About this listen

‘Sharpe and his creator are national treasures.' Sunday Telegraph

India, December 1803

The British army are closing in on enemy troops in western India and Ensign Richard Sharpe, freshly promoted yet unsure of his position, finds himself vulnerable: he’s unwelcome among the officers, yet finds hidden enemies within the ranks. With no-one he can trust, Sharpe is in serious danger when an old adversary arrives on his trail – and a terrible act of betrayal draws him into the eye of the storm.

All roads lead to Gawilghur, a legendary, impregnable fortress in the sky. In the heart of enemy territory, the British carry out a near-impossible siege. And joining the front line, risking his honour and reputation in a battle that will test him as never before, is Sharpe . . .

I'm a bit of a late joiner to Sharpe. I have read the previous two books and this is the first audio book I have listened to with Rupert Farley as narrator. The books rolls along at a blistering pace and I was faintly disappointed that it seemed to finish so quickly as I was enjoying it so much. RF's narration is the best I've heard in an audible book, he does every character (of which there are many) extremely well and his range is extraordinary. I'm looking forward to Trafalgar next. Go on Sharpe you bastard!

absolutely brilliant

Bernard Cornwell is becoming one of my favourite authors now - never thought I’d take to historical fiction being as I usually ready crime and military thrillers.

I seen Sharpe on the telly when I was a kid - had no idea it was written by the same author as the last kingdom! Bloody brilliant though, highly recommend this series - the narrator actually does sound like Sean Bean when he voices Sharpe as well, as well he should!

Excellent book, bloody fantastic!
