About this listen

Even the darkest secrets can't stay buried forever.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood.

Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children's home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. DI Kim Stone fast realizes she's on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it's too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid ,and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent. Silent Scream is the first book in the series. Watch out for Evil Games, coming soon.

Critic reviews

"A superb debut by an assured new writer. Blending sharp wit with emotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride alongside DI Kim Stone and look forward to the next outing." (Mel Sherratt)
"I absolutely loved it!.... This one is one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, and that includes mainstream authors such as James Patterson! I would seriously put this book in the same league." ( Fiona's Book Reviews)

This is an excellent story and the author is brilliant - but the Narrator .... Oh my goodness I have seldom heard worse - no actually, I have NEVER heard anything this bad. No idea of where sentences started and finished and paragraphs must be a stranger to Jan Cramer. The accents she used were diabolical, no idea of pronunciation of place names, and the speed at which she read was terrible.

I will happily read any book by this author, but I emphasise read - I will never listen to another unless the narrator changes.

Worst Narrator EVER

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I really like the story and feel the plot well formed but I just am really unconvinced by the narration. The narrator has a very pleasant and mellifluous voice which in my opinion is not best suited to a gritty thriller of this type.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Silent Scream?

I Liked the description of the man drinking malt whiskey before he was murdered.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jan Cramer’s performances?

Sadly not if it's a crime or thriller story.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Yes

Great story unconvincing narration

great audiobook full of suspense.

The story itself is great, lots of twists and turns. BUT if you set a tale in a specific place find out how to pronounch the place names properly and find someone who can actually do the accent- much of the narration was annoying and I felt very patronising to us in 'not London' because of it :/

Set in the Black Country but no research

A good story but the local accents & pronunciations were inaccurate and were a distraction

Good story
