About this listen

The hockey star, the influencer, and the deal of a lifetime.

Ty

I’m going to the pros, baby! Deal made, contract signed. Now all I have to do is finish out my final season at Smithton and stay out of trouble. I like to have a good time, but don’t worry, I’ll behave.

What I won’t do is talk to that double-crossing influencer who’s been badgering me for an interview. No thanks.

I know Walker’s type—sweet as pie on the outside, a shark on the inside.

Get this…he wants to make a deal that sounds a lot like a bribe.

Not interested. No way.

But I am curious.

Walker

I’ve never worked so hard for an interview in my life. Ugh!

Look, I get that Ty doesn’t like me. As in…he won’t return my calls and avoids me like the plague on campus.

Too bad. I’m not giving up.

I don’t want to beg, but I’m willing to barter. Every man has his price—and something to prove.

Even Ty.

Something to Prove is a low-angst, geek-jock MM bisexual college hockey romance featuring a hockey star and the adorkable influencer who’s determined to win him over…

I got the chance to listen to this one on audio and thought it was really cute. Kirt Graves did a great job with the narration, and the story itself was fun and easy to get into. Lots of good banter, very low angst, and just a light touch of spice—perfect for when you want something sweet and simple.

Something to Prove is book two in Lane Hayes’ Smithton Bears series, and I loved it even more than the first! It follows two Smithton seniors—one a hockey player chasing the big leagues, the other a popular influencer I completely fell for.

I’m enjoying Lane Hayes’s Smithton Bears Hockey team series. The last book was great and this one was even better. Naturally, I started this book mad at Walker – he outed the couple from the last story. There’s nothing worse then outing someone.

Now I find out that he honestly didn’t mean to. That feels a little thin – he didn’t have permission to share a picture of two guys kissing – but he says he didn’t mean it. Now, I don’t understand influencers, but I know they can do really well. I supposed if I spent time on social media, I might better comprehend it. That said, there’s a guy who takes pictures of dogs in New York City and I enjoy this clips. So maybe I’m more sucked in than I want to believe.

Big I digress.

Ty is an up-and-coming hockey player at the university. He’s bisexual – and the AHL team who drafted him knows that – but since he’s only ever seen with women, no one’s all that perturbed.

Then his agent says he needs to raise his profile. Best way to do that? Be interviewed by Walker.

Ugh.

But Ty wants the biggest contract he can get – for all the right reasons. He’s got something to prove.

Walker wants to redeem himself and get an interview with the hottest hockey player – for all the right reason. (At least I want to believe.) He’s got something to prove.

Then…they really get to know each other. They discover things about each other. They share heartbreaking stories about their childhoods and find, although their experiences were vastly different, that they both had rough things happen.

They bond. They start having sex. But it’s not really a relationship.

Until they’re outed.

That said, this is a low angst story. Good friends, an adorable Himalayan cat, and families who really care.

Kirt Graves is a great narrator for this series and I enjoy his performances. I can’t wait for the next book.

Walker made a huge mistake that seriously hurt Ty's friend, so he's absolutely holding a grudge.
Walker is determined to make things right so he pesters Ty for an interview.
These two had great chemistry and I loved the banter between them.
I really enjoyed that they finally took the time to actually get to know each other, not just who they present to the world.
Kirt Graves did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.

Low angst easy read.
The enemies to lovers aspect is done well, with Ty steadfastly clinging to the enemies label even while fighting the change in feelings as they get to know each other better. And I love that they got to know each other while making content for Walker's channel.
Great to see Jett and Malcolm pop up a couple of times.
As expected there's a third act break up and a very public declaration of feelings. As a reader I'm kinda over third act break ups, and as a introvert the thought of a public declaration gives me hives. But the break up didn't stretch on for long and I totally adored Ty's spontaneous method for his declaration.
It's great to see Ty settled - the epilogue is several years down the line - and I can't wait for the next team member to find their HEA. From the title of the new book I can guess who it's going to be. But I'd like Robin to find his HEA too, and since he has an aversion to sweaty locker rooms, there's a certain closeted footballer in need of a new hook up. (I know that can't really be a Bears story, it's Bears adjacent.)
The narrator does an excellent job as usual.
