About this listen

London, 1964

Psychopathic gangster Ronnie Kray has a “list” of persons who have “taken liberties” and who are to be disposed of, and now barrister Charles Holborne finds his name at the top of the list. He can’t spend his life looking over his shoulder, but how to take the fight to the two most violent gangsters in London?

There seems no obvious danger in taking the murder brief that good fortune lands on his desk. But the accused is the Lighterman...a man with whom Charles has history....

“An excellent thriller, with the Kray twins providing a palpable sense of menace in the background, great action on the river and some gripping courtroom drama.” (Crime Review)

“There is a hint of John le Carré in this tough legal thriller that packs a punch as the reader is swept along towards a fascinating conclusion.” (Dorset Book Detective)

“Vivid, gripping and authentic storytelling...Simon Michael’s best thriller yet.” (Robert Daws)

"One of the key attractions of Simon's Charles Holborne series is the depiction of London, in all it gangland glamour and swinging 60s glory. He brings the past back to life across a beautifully rendered 60s landscape, and delivers a thrilling piece of thriller fiction that will excite any fan of the genre." (Book2Book)

I’m enjoying the book but it’s not the same narrator and I can’t take to the style of narration! Might have to get it on kindle and read it instead.

Good story

... Simon Michael should stick to what he knows best - writing stories. Colin Mace, who read the previous two books, was SO much better. A stronger voice. Please bring Colin Mace back. Also the Ait's on the River should be pronounced Eight, not as SM did, incorrectly. However, having said all that, we very much enjoyed this and the two previous books and look forward to more.

Great story, but ...

Simon Michael has constructed such well rounded characters, he obviously knows so well. This is a good story - just the right amount of jargon to make it plausible. I’ll be getting the next instalment. Very well narrated by the author and it tells as he reads each character with their distinctive personalities.

The more I read the more I like

I’m so happy these are being released on Audio - wonderful storytelling, thrilling, historical and very human. More please.

More please!

I have really enjoyed listening to the Charles H books, book 3 however has been spoilt for me by the author deciding to narrate himself. Colin Mace did a fantastic job on book 1 and 2, he is Charles! To the author, you write interesting books that are entertaining to listen to when driving to and fro from work……you trusted your “baby” to Colin and he did you proud, please go back to him and concentrate on writing more good stories.

Let it go
