About this listen

A rescued rogue...

Scandal has rocked the city of London. Colin Eversea, a handsome, reckless unapologetic rogue is sentenced to hang for murder and, inconveniently for him, the only witness to the crime disappears. Then again, throughout history, the Everseas have always managed to cheat fate in style: Colin is snatched from the gallows by a beautiful, clever mercenary.

A captivating captor...

Cool-headed, daring Madeleine Greenway is immune to Colin's vaunted charm. Her mission is not to rescue Colin but to kidnap him, and to be paid handsomely for it. But when it becomes clear that whoever wants Colin alive wants Madeline dead, the two become uneasy allies in a deadly race for truth. Together, they'll face great danger - and a passion neither can resist.

Contains mature themes.

I loved the mystery, but found the main characters frustrating. I wanted to shake them. The hanging scenes were gripping. Unfortunately the narrator didn’t have enough diverse voices to prevent confusion between characters. I’m glad, I stayed until the end. But will not read again. And I believe that I won’t be seeking this author again. Unless she has great feedback in the future, on other books.

Well written , but frustrating

I really enjoyed the fun mystery and adventure of the story. I also very much enjoyed the two protagonists, Mad and Collin. But my issue was that the final phases of the love story felt rushed, which was only exacerbated by the fact that Justine Eyre, who usually have impeccably pacing, sped through the writing like lightning. There were never any pauses to absorb, and often even led to confusion.

So far the rest of the series that’s available is a bit better in its narration and written.

Could have been so much better!

This book is incredibly hard to review. There is so much good here, I loved both the main characters. They were well matched, there’s sexual chemistry, and there’s dry wit between them. And yet. The hero is in love with another woman throughout the 90% of the book. There’s no thread of him beginning to question their compatibility. Even at the end, he’s thinking that he’s missed her voice, she’s beautiful. This had the makings of being one of my favourite HR books, and so it’s left me feeling frustrated with the author.

Frustrating

The story, though at times adventurous and exciting, got pretty confusing due to the very poor narration skills of Mrs.Eyre, who seems to have forgotten to pause between paragraphs/chapters and gave her voice a dreadful "newscaster" cadence.
One moment you are with Madeline and Colin and in the next sentence (no breath, no pause, nothing in between) you are with Marcus in a meeting. I would recommend reading this novel instead of "just" listening.

Dreadful Narration
