About this listen

Through the eternal night of the Beyond, Gael carries his burden: two unfailing blades of steel along with a role he never cared for — executioner.

A prisoner of his own immortal body, he's haunted by memories of the woman he lost, and the only thing to keep him sane is the hope to find out the truth about her disappearance ninety sunless years ago.

Thrown off balance in a momentary flare of vengeance, Gael puts himself between the devil and the deep sea. His master and lord — the White Prince — knows a simple way to deal with treason. But death — the only means to escape the Beyond — is out of the question for Gael.

As he prepares the invasion of the Mortal Realm, the White Prince is driven by his past scars. Close to his victory, he's set his mind on keeping his best executioner by his side, and for the reasons he won't share even with his trusted sidekicks. Death sentence on hold, Gael has to prove himself the man to stand by the interests of the Chthonic kingdom.

Long numbed to his atrocious job, Gael dreads the new task as now he must choose between the nobility making him human and something his comrade in arms and only friend, David, calls a greater good — their chance at destroying the White Prince's hopes for invading the Mortal Realm.

Willing or not, Gael must act fast, for the mighty beast he's bound to, the one waking in the depth of the Somber Abyss, is nearing the point of his full power. Millions of lives at stake, Gael must demonstrate his unwavering loyalty, and through a soul-crippling task no less.

How far will he go for the sake of the greater good?

A good listen. The world building was interesting and the swap between them was clever.
The characters were strange but in a good way. I wanted some to come through and others to not get anywhere. As they were strange and back stabbed.
But the ones I liked I really liked.
Good narration, mixed for voices and story tension

A good listen

A great story. You get hooked from the first world to very last.
I loved every twist, and the last one was. Oh boy, that’s what a twist.
I can’t wait to see what happens next

The story will keep you on your toes

It took me a little while to click with the writers style but once I had I really enjoyed this. Ive read a lot of non fiction recently so possibly my fault but there is a lot of detailed description in some sections which at the beginning kept the pace down. The story was so good later on I didn't notice it.

There is clear world building and leads into sequels but it holds together and brings you with it.

The main characters are well developed and depth is added as you go through. Having taken 2 chapters to get myself into the book I then didn't want it to end.

Performance was very good but voicing of one character changed notably in the second half.

I will be buying the 2nd book and am excited to see where the author goes with the great base they've built.

A slow burning but ultimately gripping fantasy
