Summary

One of the many engineers that keep Beta, the city under the sea, running, Mira only wants to make her family proud and to prove herself worthy.

She knows the mysterious city better than anyone and it's her dream to help it flourish. Then, on a solo job in an abandoned section of the city, she encounters a monster of legend: an undine, a dangerous merman from an ancient civilization, long forgotten.

Arges has fought his entire life for his people. With deadly creatures under his control, he plans to eradicate Beta once and for all to protect his kind and their peaceful way of life. But when a human woman saves him, she unknowingly creates a bond between them, one he can't ignore. Even though her flaming red hair haunts his dreams, he needs her for information on the undine's enemies.

So he steals her. Keeps her. Feeds her. Only to realize their bond is far deeper than captor and captive. He cannot let her go but he cannot keep her under the sea, either. In a battle to determine if love can survive a war beneath the waves, it will be their decision that changes the tides.

An interesting plot with great world-building. It drew me in and held my attention. The author created believable characters which were brought to life by the excellent narration.

Interesting and enjoyable story

I was pleasantly surprised by this book and had a good plot and characters were all great for me I like a bit more spice in my books but when the spice did come it was perfectly written and worth the wait 💞🧜‍♂️👩‍🦰

enjoyed it more than thought I would

I listened to two of Emma Hamms other books first (the first two troll books) and enjoyed them enough to try these too. These are so much better. I had issues with some of the relationships of the troll books, especially the first one, but these make more sense to me. If you enjoy romances of slightly obsessed but not controlling men with women who have their own confidence and abilities this is definitely worth a listen. The only downside for me was the female voice actor, Garmen Rose. Her performance was fine, and if she had not been alongside Will Watt I wouldn't have had any comments to make. Unfortunately for her, Will Watt's performance had so much more depth of feeling that hers felt wooden and jarring by comparison.

Engaging romance

The female narrator just ruined this for me. She was a good narrator but such a poor choice for this character. She sounded like a high class English woman in her 50’s. Why would they choose that for this character?
I had to get the book on kindle and skip all the female chapters on audible and could only listen to the male chapters. He was excellent.
I’ve noticed the next book has the same narrator and so it will have to be a “no” from me unfortunately.
Story was good, but listen to a sample before you commit to buying.

Female narrator such a strange choice
