A Prayer for When We’re Just Going Through the Motions

    Loving God,

    sometimes we find ourselves

    just going through the motions.

    Our days become routine.

    And life begins to feel

    like something to manage

rather than something to truly live.

    We grow tired.

    Half awake and disconnected.

    Help us rediscover

    what brings life,

    hope, and joy

    into the world around us.

    Remind us

    that each of us

    has something we can do,

    something we can give,

    and some way

    to make life better

    for someone else.

And when the nights feel cold,

help our lives glow warm again…

    with passion, purpose, and possibility.

    Amen.

When We Feel Like We’re Just Going Through the Motions

    Sometimes we find ourselves

    just going through the motions.

    And our days become

little more than a list of chores…

    something to get through

    rather than truly live.

    But Romans reminds us

    not to lose our fire.

    Not to drift through life

    half awake

    and disconnected

from what gives our lives meaning.

“Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord.”

    — from Epistle to the Romans 12:11

    Serve is the operative word.

Each of us has something we can do.

Each of us has something we can give.

    Each of us is capable

    of making someone,

    somewhere,

    a little better off…

    and the world

    a little brighter.

    And when we dedicate ourselves

    to whatever that is,

our lives begin to glow again…

    with the warmest flames

    even on the coldest nights.

    Peace be with you.

A Prayer for When We Struggle to Live Together

    Loving God,

    sometimes we struggle

    to live with one another.

We do not think the same.

We do not believe the same.

We do not live the same.

    And often,

    our differences become reasons

    to separate from one another,

    fear one another,

or stop listening to one another.

    Help us resist the temptation

    to believe

    that every difference

    must become division.

    Help us remain open

    to one another

    even when understanding

    does not come easily.

    Remind us

    that harmony is not created

    when every voice

    sings the same note.

    It emerges

    when different voices

learn to carry the song together.

    Amen.

When We Don’t Know How to Live Together

    Sometimes we struggle

    to live with one another.

    We don’t think the same.

    We don’t believe the same.

    We don’t live the same.

    And often,

    our differences become reasons

    to separate,

    dismiss,

    or fear one another.

    Nevertheless,

    Paul writes in Romans:

“Live in harmony with one another…”

    — from Epistle to the Romans 12:16

    When singers harmonize,

they do not sing the same notes.

    They learn

    to sing different notes together.

    We don’t become identical.

    But we can learn

how to sing our parts together.

    Because harmony is not created

when only one voice is heard.

    It emerges

    when different voices

learn to carry the song together.

A Prayer for When Trouble Comes to Our Door

    Loving God,

    sometimes trouble enters our lives

    without warning.

    A difficult conversation.

    Bad news.

A loss we did not see coming.

    And when these moments appear,

    we are often overwhelmed.

    We wonder what happened.

    We wonder what comes next.

We wonder how we will move forward.

    In these moments,

help us not to collapse in fear.

    Help us remember

    that hardship does not mean

    we have been abandoned.

    And when life becomes difficult,

    help us move through it

    with courage,

    endurance,

    and trust.

    Shape us through the challenges

    we cannot avoid.

Refine what is good within us.

And remind us of your presence

    within and among us

    in difficult seasons.

    Amen.

When Trouble Comes to Our Door

    Sometimes trouble enters our lives

    without warning.

    A difficult conversation.

    Bad news.

A loss we did not see coming.

    And when these moments appear,

    we often ask:

    “How did this happen?”

    “Could this have been avoided?”

    “What do we do now?”

First Epistle of Peter reminds us,

    “Beloved, do not be surprised

    at the fiery ordeal

that is taking place among you…”

    — from First Epistle of Peter 4:12

The text does not teach us

    to love suffering.

    But it does remind us

    that some challenges

    are part of life,

    and even in hardship

    we are still being formed.

    Earlier in the letter,

our lives are compared to gold

    being refined by fire.

    And while the text

    does not encourage us

    to seek hardship,

    it does encourage us

    not to collapse in fear

    when hardship comes.

    And to move through it

    with courage,

    endurance,

    and trust.

A Prayer for When We Can’t Handle Everything Alone

    Loving God,

    sometimes we face problems

    we cannot solve.

And what has always worked before

    stops working.

The strength we once relied on

    no longer feels sufficient.

    Our confidence is shaken.

And we are no longer sure

    what to do next.

    In moments like these,

    help us stop pretending…

    Help us acknowledge

    our limits

    without shame.

    Help us reach out for

    the support

    we need.

    Remind us

    that new strength

begins in the humility of knowing

we do not have to carry

    our burdens alone.

    Amen.

When What Used to Work Stops Working

    Sometimes we face problems

    we cannot solve.

And what has always worked before

    stops working.

“The bows of the mighty are broken…”

    — from 1 Samuel 2:4

    When our bows are broken,

    our confidence is shaken.

And we are no longer sure

    what to do next.

    1 Samuel suggests

    that new strength

    often begins in humility:

    “the feeble gird on strength.”

We do not have to pretend

    to be strong.

We do not have to pretend

    we are unafraid.

We do not have to pretend

we have it all figured out.

    Just the opposite.

    When we acknowledge our limits,

    and our need for help,

    we begin to discover

    a strength

    far greater than our own.
