President Donald Trump said that he is ready to make his 'final determination' on a deal to extend a ceasefire with Iran. The president is the final sign off on a deal reached by negotiators that would extend the fragile ceasefire by 60 days and open the floor for further talks on Iran's nuclear program. Writing on Truth Social, President Trump laid out conditions for a tentative agreement, saying that Iran "must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions."

The US and Iran have reached a tentative deal to extend a ceasefire by 60 days and launch further talks on Tehran’s nuclear program, a US source familiar with the matter said, raising hopes the three-month conflict could be nearing a resolution.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations, confirmed an earlier report from Axios. President Donald Trump has yet to agree to the terms. Both countries have previously hailed progress, with Trump repeatedly indicating the US was close to securing an agreement — only for the stalemate to drag on.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday would only say “the teams have been going back and forth” when pressed if an interim deal has been clinched. He insisted Trump’s three “red lines” — reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iran turning over highly enriched uranium and ending its nuclear program — remain necessary for any pact.

President Donald Trump asserted that no one nation would control the vital Strait of Hormuz waterway, highlighting a key sticking point in resolving the war with Iran.

Trump was asked during a meeting of his Cabinet officials if he was comfortable with a short-term deal that would open the strait but under Iranian control.

“Nobody’s going to control it. It’s international waters,” Trump said Wednesday at the White House. “The strait’s going to be open to everybody” and the US will “watch over it.”

The US is touting progress toward a peace deal with Iran to end the nearly three-month war, even amid fresh hostilities and uncertainty over the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Security in the crucial energy waterway remained unclear Tuesday after the two sides exchanged strikes overnight and US Central Command pushed back on reports that suggested the military was helping escort vessels.

The renewed clashes occurred just hours after US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Tehran to extend their ceasefire and reopen the strait are proceeding. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has cautioned that any deal would likely take a few days to finalize.

    May 22 2026

Insight & analysis on the White House and Capitol Hill.

President Donald Trump stressed that he wants Kevin Warsh to independently lead the Federal Reserve, as he looked to downplay investor concern that he would pressure the new central bank chief on policy decisions.

Warsh, who has promised the biggest shakeup in decades at the US central bank, was sworn into office Friday in a White House ceremony as the 17th chair of the Fed.

“I want Kevin to be totally independent. I want him to be independent and just do a great job. Don’t look at me, don’t look at anybody, just do your own thing and do a great job,” Trump said during the swearing-in ceremony.

Senate Republicans stalemated over President Donald Trump $1.8 billion account to pay political allies alleged to be victims of government “weaponization,” a dramatic setback for the president even as he threatens to vanquish perceived political foes within his own party.

The lawmakers, who are also at odds over taxpayer funding for Trump’s White House ballroom, abandoned plans to pass a partisan $72 billion immigration enforcement package before leaving Washington for a week-long Memorial Day break because of the disagreement over the two Trump priorities.

Majority Leader John Thune said Thursday the Senate would “pick up where we left off” after the break.
