What if the way you see the world isn’t actually clear? What if there’s been a “plank” in your eye for so long that you don’t even know it’s there?
In this episode, Terry explores Jesus’ teaching about judgment, perspective, and self-awareness. Jesus challenges us to examine our own hearts before trying to fix others. But what happens when the beliefs shaping our perspective were formed in childhood? When our “plank” is made up of survival strategies we learned long ago?
This episode dives into how early beliefs shape our behaviors, relationships, and sense of worth—and how God invites us to see differently.
Jesus asks why we notice the speck in someone else’s eye while ignoring the plank in our own. But sometimes we don’t see the plank because it has always been there.
Childhood experiences often shape:
- How we define safety
- How we handle emotions
- How we measure worth
- How we respond to conflict
These beliefs become protective strategies… but eventually they can become limiting patterns.
Identifying with Martha
Martha in Luke 10 shows this same pattern. She was busy, responsible, and focused on meeting everyone’s needs. She believed she was doing the right thing — being a gracious host, caring for others, and handling responsibilities.
But Jesus gently redirected her: “You are worried and upset about many things… but only one thing is needed.”
Martha’s history shaped her priorities. Her beliefs shaped her behavior. And Jesus invited her into something different — presence, learning, and relationship.
Unlearning lifelong patterns is not easy. These behaviors once kept us safe. But God invites us to something new.
Romans 12:2 reminds us: We are transformed by changing the way we think.
Transformation happens when we:
- Notice our beliefs
- Question old patterns
- Allow God to reshape our thinking
- Practice new responses
- Prioritize what truly matters
This is a process. Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. But as we allow God to change the way we think, we begin to see clearly — without the plank — and walk in freedom
