Trial lawyers do not become great overnight. It takes persistence, a relentless work ethic, a willingness to learn from mistakes, a burning passion for the craft, an authentic self, and the courage and vulnerability to enter the arena time and again.

Those who become great trial lawyers also become great people. Through their work, they grapple with the realities of the human condition and in the process cultivate character, principle, integrity, leadership, strength, compassion, and perseverance.

Based out of Richmond, Virginia, Courtroom Stories & Tactics by RVA Trial Lawyers exists for lawyers who try cases to juries on behalf of people. Through our podcast, we hope to learn from them, support them, connect them, inspire them, and preserve their work for future trial lawyers.

  • The Shocking Reality of Capital Punishment | Corinna Lain (Law School Professor)
    Jun 17 2026

Why are states so bad at lethal injection?

There are the moral arguments and debates on capital punishment itself, its effectiveness in deterrence and the ethics of state-sanctioned executions.

But interwoven into those debates are the methods of capital punishment, particularly lethal injection. What has long been presented as a clean, non-violent process has in fact proven to be the opposite.

Professor Corinna Lain of the University of Richmond School of Law has written a critical analysis, after seven years of research and first-hand documentation, called "Secrets of the Killing State: The Untold Story of Lethal Injection." She joins us today to discuss her findings, and you'll be shocked to learn what really happens.

From hiding disturbing reactions to paralysis, to improperly measured dosages, black market sourcing of drugs by state officials, relying on unlicensed doctors, and more, it is remarkable the lengths the state will go to to perform lethal injections.

Which makes us ask, why does it happen this way, and how did we get here?

"They're pushing this huge rock of Sisyphus uphill. Why? I don't even get it. The only conclusion I can come to is that lethal injection just does one thing well. Only one thing. And that is it hides state violence." - Professor Corinna Lain

    In this episode, we discuss:

◼️ How lethal injection procedures are often flawed and inhumane.
◼️ That the violence of execution methods is often hidden from public view.
◼️ Why the death penalty itself does not effectively deter crime.
◼️ How victims' families often find that executions do not provide the closure they expect.
◼️ That research and data are often lacking in lethal injection protocols.
◼️ Why public awareness of the realities of the death penalty is crucial for informed discourse.

  • Mastering Digital Marketing for Trial Lawyers | Kelly Gordon (SEO + Digital Marketing Specialist)
    Jun 7 2026

You can't rank for what doesn't exist.

The world of online marketing can seem overwhelming, complicated and exploitive: as lawyers, we know that we're targets for agencies and consultants who see our profession and think $$$.

Nevertheless, digital marketing is an area you can't ignore. Fortunately, it's also one where you can hit the ground running and quickly start punching above your weight.

But you have to get started.

Kelly Gordon is founder & CEO of Dapper Codes, a digital marketing strategy firm. She joins us today to give us direction on how to find your niche as a trial lawyer, the importance of leaning into that niche, having clarity and consistency in your message, what works for SEO in 2026, and how it's all being impacted by AI.

Just like with trial lawyers helping those hurt from no fault of their own, the work Kelly and her firm do for small businesses has tremendous, meaningful impact: helping one business owner can impact an entire family.

Make sure the people who need your help know that you're out there.

"You can get a lot of people's attention, but if that attention doesn't resonate, then they're not going to buy, and then none of it makes sense. So, 'Who are you? Why do you do what you do? And what is it that you do exactly right?'" - Kelly Gordon

    In this episode, we discuss:

◼️ The distinction between marketing and visibility.
◼️ Why search engine optimization is just scratching the surface.
◼️ How AI has impacted traditional search results.
◼️ How to make sure that people know you are an option for what they need.
◼️ Why FAQ sections are more important than ever.

  • Better Health Equals Better Results | Samuel Johnston (Health + Performance Coach)
    May 28 2026

Today's episode is part of our effort to put a broader perspective on the work and life of trial lawyers: it's not just about the case, the training and the preparation. It's also about your health, your stamina, work/life balance and your mental strength.

Sam Johnston is a fitness coach and former college hockey player, who has become an expert in understanding nutrition, fitness and balance. Sam will be the first to tell you that it is not any one catch-all solution, or latest trend, that will make a difference to your health and stamina. It's finding the right balance, but also doing so in a way that makes sense for your body and performance.

Sam shares detailed information on understanding diet, protein, choosing the right fats (and how much is healthy), the impact of alcohol, what are peptides and how revolutionary they are, and so much more.

But at the heart of it is recognition of something that we all need, no matter where we are in life: a coach and mentor. Sam has a coach. His coach has a coach. Sharif and Nael both have mentors who have helped guide them personally and professionally.

When you look after yourself, you have better performance, and better results. And so, you can see why this is so important and relatable to trial lawyers. As in our previous episodes about family balance, team work, avoiding the workaholic syndrome and more, today's focus on health and fitness will help you be better prepared, better focused and better enjoy this work that we are so fortunate to do.

" I believe you need to take health into your own hands. You need to have agency over it." - Sam Johnston

    In this episode, we discuss:

◼️ Why nutrition is foundational for success in the court room.
◼️ How getting regular blood work is so crucial to preventing health issues.
◼️ How to combat the pressure to drink alcohol in social situations, especially for trial lawyers.
◼️ What are peptides and how they can offer various health benefits when used correctly.
◼️ Emphasizing quality over quantity in fitness routines.
