• 14 - Marcus Richards and glacial erratics
    Jul 2 2026
When we discovered that the Friends of Tūhura donated the large glacial erratic boulder at the museum’s original entrance on Great King St, we were curious. What even is a glacial erratic?! We asked Marcus Richards Collections Technician in Natural Sciences at Tūhura who points out that boulders litter our landscapes, and they all have a story to tell. Marcus illuminates where this glacial erratic came from and why it’s significant enough to earn its place of pride at a museum entrance along with a Moeraki Boulder/ Kaihinaki. In this animated kōrero, Marcus shares how he came to study paleontology at the University of Otago, work in its Geology Department and become part of the Natural Sciences team at Tūhura. Join us to hear how Cushla McKinney and Jessica Hall have developed gallery trails for both young children and those more fully fledged. Cushla has served the Friends of Tūhura for many years as council member and president. She has had a long-standing goal for the Friends to provide more family-friendly activities and has collaborated with Jess Hall for this. Cushla and Jess recruited their children to help locate items in Tūhura’s galleries that have a connection with the Friends of Tūhura. Using their combined sleuthing skills, they have put together gallery trails for others to use in the winter months.
