Joseph Rouletabille est hanté par une femme qui venait le visiter, enfant, au pensionnat et dont il conserve le souvenir obsédant du parfum. Es ironico que de las decenas de obras que escribiera el novelista frances Gaston Leroux la que le ha dado inmortalidad es el clasico del horror llamado El fantasma de la opera, la historia de un artista desfigurado que se oculta en las catacumbas de la Opera de Paris para vengarse contra el mundo, hasta el dia que se enamora de una bella cantante, que cambia por completo el curso de su vida.

La obra cuenta la historia de un misterioso personaje apodado como "El Fantasma" que vive en el edificio del Palacio de la ópera Garnier. El tenebroso protagonista vive atormentado por su deformidad y fealdad, siente una gran pasión por la música y lucha para satisfacer su pasión por la belleza. Así es como se enamora de la joven y bella vocalista Christine Daaé. Para conseguir a la joven, el Fantasma revive su pasado de inventor de trampas y mazmorras, y vuelve a ser un ser de tinieblas.

Gaston Leroux spiega in questa famoso romanzo, pubblicato nel 1910, tutta la sua passione per il mistero e i trabocchetti, già noti al pubblico nel "Mistero della camera gialla" (che fu pubblicato tre anni prima). Qui lo scenario è molto più importante: l'Opéra di Parigi, che contiene un mondo sotterraneo ignoto ai più, ove si trova persino un lago. E il leggendario fantasma sarà poi davvero un essere soprannaturale? L'archetipo del mostro e della bella viene riproposto in questo avvincente romanzo, insieme a note ironiche e romantiche che colorano di rosa il nero del mistero.

Un vero rompicapo poliziesco: un delitto commesso in una stanza ermeticamente chiusa. Leroux cita espressamente i suoi colleghi autori che hanno proposto rompicapi simili: Edgar Allan Poe e Arthur Conan Doyle. Il personaggio in grado di risolvere il mistero è profondamente diverso da Sherlock Holmes: è un giovane reporter di appena diciott'anni soprannominato Rouletabille, che, a fine romanzo, l'autore promette di far diventare il protagonista di altri suoi romanzi. Ma il romanzo è davvero ben congegnato e nessun dettaglio rimane privo di spiegazione.
