A friend of the narrator, a very brave but sometimes reckless lieutenant, is killed in action. The narrator becomes the possessor of a letter that he returns to the sender after the war is over. He finds the sender of the letter to be a very beautiful, sophisticated, but self-centered woman. So self-centered one wonders if she understands the meaning of the narrator's last words to her.

"The Middle Toe of the Right Foot", a ghost story by the writer and Civil War soldier Ambrose Bierce, was first published in The San Francisco Examiner in 1890. A man named Manton had murdered his children, and his wife who lacked the middle toe of her right foot. A decade later, he returns to the area; and having been recognized, is provoked to a duel in the dark, to be held at the scene of the crime. When the time of the duel comes, no antagonist appears, and Manton stands alone in the haunted darkness. The next day, they found his corpse, throttled by terror, crouching in a corner.

This short story is a series of letters from Mary Jane to her friend Irene, whom she excitedly informs of the handsome and charming man she has met. A childhood friend, Raynor, has also appeared and is causing trouble. Mary Anne explains that she and Raynor were part of a trio of childhood friends and that the third had died a while ago...or so she thought.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842 - circa 1914) was a short story writer, journalist, poet, and Civil War veteran. Bierce wrote realistically of the terrible things he had seen in the Civil War in stories like "The Affair at Coulter's Notch", making him a pioneer of the psychological horror story. While visiting a friend in San Francisco our narrator hears a knock on the wall during dinner. He and his friend examine the wall to find it is an outside wall and no one could have knocked on it. Our narrator's friend described how he had met a young woman whom he lived next to and they would knock on the walls to each other....
