Westly and Raider are coming to grips with the new world and the tremendous changes since the solar storm caused the nationwide power failures. The problems in the Flagg household seem to focus on a coming confrontation between good people and those at the Crater of Diamonds. The Carpenters have been invited to visit Tina's parents in Arizona, which ties into some training Tina wants to sign Sarge up for. The problem arises when Rick isn’t quite ready to tackle the desert yet. The physical wounds are long gone, but he’s still working on the mental ones.

Tension grips the country as the nuclear talks with Iran start to go poorly. This is largely ignored by the populace, and the threat of war goes unheeded.
