Munich, 1946. La ville a été très touchée par les bombardements. Tandis que les troupes américaines s'installent durablement, les civils allemands cherchent à survivre. Misère et humiliation, c'est précisément ce que veut fuir Birgid, une jeune infirmière à peine revenue du front de l'Est.
