The only hope for mankind is Project Orpheus, an unprecedented initiative on the part of the allied governments to enable human life to continue on Kepler-442b, a planet over a thousand light years from Earth. Two spaceships are under construction, which will leave for that remote solar system with a specialized crew to terraform the planet and make it habitable. Steven Rhodes, the director of Project Orpheus, will travel in the first of them. His daughter Emily, a specialist technician in Artificial Intelligence, will follow on the second ship, five years later.

Still with no news of her father and the Galileo space station. Emily Rhodes and her colleagues will have to set up a permanent base on the surface of Kepler-442b. To be able to do this, they will have to deal with the threat presented by the Yokai, the terrifying creatures which attacked their camp and took the life of Private Parrish. Meanwhile they will have to establish contact with the other civilization which inhabits the planet.

Vaahur y el capitán Garth buscarán acabar de una vez por todas con Emily y el Proyecto Orfeo. La confrontación entre ambas partes será inevitable.

Yisht, la ayudante de Khikhya ha desparecido sin dejar rastro. Emily está preocupada por la suerte de la kepleriana, a la que ha cogido mucho cariño. Dos investigadores se encargarán de resolver su misteriosa desaparición. Los mensajes que Steven Rhodes dejó grabados hablan de una antigua base alienígena debajo del cráter cercano a la base Magallanes. Lo que allí hay escondido puede ayudar a la humanidad a conseguir la supervivencia. El capitán Garth ha sido vencido.

Todavía sin noticias de su padre y de la estación espacial Galileo, Emily Rhodes y sus compañeros tendrán que instalar una base permanente en la superficie de Kepler-442b. Para ello, deberán solucionar antes la amenaza que representan los Yokai, las terroríficas criaturas que atacaron su campamento y se cobraron la vida del soldado Parrish.
