Det hele starter med en brevveksling mellem to meget forskellige kvinder. Den generte bogorm Sara er 28 år og fra Haninge i Sverige, og Amy er 75 og fra Broken Wheel i Iowa, USA. Efter at have skrevet sammen i to år og udvekslet tanker om primært bøger, men også om livet generelt, bestemmer Sara sig for at besøge Amy. Da hun ankommer, er Amy i mellemtiden pludselig død. Sara står nu alene i en lille flække ude i ingenting.
