In 1476, Micheletto Faliero, a corrupt banker, is imprisoned in Venice for smuggling spices. While in prison, he experiences a mystical phenomenon known as the Miracle of the Rose. According to legend, when one is in dire straits or facing imminent death, they will find a red rose nearby, a sign that God has come to bear away their anguish or rescue their souls. Micheletto tries to fight his growing transformation, but against his will, his impure habits are slowly turning into charitable ones, earning him the reputation of a saint.

Micheletto D' Angelo is one of many Italian merchant-bankers monopolizing on Venice's vast trading empire in the mid 15th century. But when through greed and corruption he ends up in prison, even facing the penalty of death, he encounters a mysterious fellow inmate. From this inmate, he inherits a peculiar poem of a rose, written in the fashion of a parable, which seemingly recounts the inmate's life; which life is surprisingly noble, and not criminal.

A 13th century French priest is recruited by three Italian merchants to aid them in a holy quest to find a secret chamber that allegedly lies buried beneath the crusader held city of Jerusalem. It is a quest that will benefit all of Christendom and bring glory and salvation to those who discover the chamber. They embark on the quest and at once realize that it is far more dangerous than they ever anticipated.
