Alvin H. Benson viene ritrovato morto nel soggiorno della sua lussuosa residenza: un proiettile sparato frontalmente, a distanza ravvicinata, gli ha trapassato il cranio.

Il titolo di questo romanzo giallo fu deciso, postumo, dall'editore di S.S. Van Dine, perchè non sembra fosse nelle sue intenzioni concludere la carriera del suo raffinato alter ego. L'autore morì poco dopo la fine della seconda stesura del romanzo, che infatti ha uno stile più asciutto degli altri. Vance si muove negli ambienti ricchi della società newyorkese, fra gente alla moda e assassini ben congegnati.

Pubblicata nel 1934, questa avventura di Philo Vance, solutore di enigmi polizieschi, ci porta in un'atmosfera quasi irreale, pur trovandosi ai margini di Manhattan. Esistono davvero i draghi? Tutto sembra portare a questa conclusione, e Vance, erudito poliedrico, che spazia dalla mitologia alla ittiologia, ci porterà alla conclusione che forse la soluzione più banale è quella più probabile, nonostante la nostra voglia di novità ci porterebbe a preferire le soluzioni sovrannaturali. Uno dei primi gialli del famoso giallista S. S. Van Dine che introduce il suo amato Philo Vance, solutore di enigmi polizieschi. Lo "scioglitore di enigmi", le cui gesta sono raccontate da un amico, e che aiuta la polizia a risolvere casi altrimenti insolubili ricalca evidentemente l'esempio di Holmes e Watson, ma la tecnica di indagine è totalmente diversa, basandosi su criteri psicologici ed estetici. Unico punto di contatto fra i due: ll'intelligenza superiore e il gentile disprezzo dei metodi della polizia ufficiale.
