Het uitschot van de samenleving. Maar zijn ze wel gek, of heeft de maatschappij de vrouwen als dusdanig bestempeld om van hen af te zijn? Eén avond per jaar lijkt deze vraag irrelevant, als de Parijse elite danst met de gek verklaarde vrouwen. Het bal der gekken is voor zowel de elite als de verbannen vrouwen het hoogtepunt van het jaar en voor de laatsten een zeldzaam moment van hoop.
