De Jiddische taal bestaat al meer dan 1000 jaar en is een samensmelting van het Hebreeuws en een aantal Europese talen, waaronder Duits. Het wordt in het Hebreeuwse alfabet geschreven. Het Nederlands heeft een groot aantal woorden aan het Jiddisch ontleend. Op het hoogtepunt spraken meer dan tien miljoen mensen deze hybride taal.
