The Kingdom of God Is Within You by Leo Tolstoy is a philosophical treatise first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in his home country of Russia. The work is the culmination of 30 years of Tolstoy's thinking, and sets out rules for a new organization of society, based on an interpretation of Christianity which focuses on universal love. George Müller was a Christian evangelist and director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. The Life of Trust contains his diary up to 1860, supplemented by autobiographical notes at the start and throughout the text. Mueller founded a number of orphanages in England in the 19th century whilst refusing to personally benefit in any way, fully trusting that God would provide in his financial needs. Throughout his life, he relied on God’s goodness in order to feed, clothe, and house thousands of English children under his care.

Cabeza de Vaca was part of a 1527 Spanish expedition to explore the region north of the Gulf of Mexico. His group lost contact with their ships, and traveled on foot across Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico for the next eight years. This work, written in 1542 as an official report to the king of Spain, is a rich source of information on the ancient Southwest: the indigenous people, the climate, and the flora and fauna.

Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) was an early Christian theologian and philosopher from North Africa whose writings influenced all of Western Christianity. Augustine's Confessions is one of the most influential works of Latin literature. Written in the last years of the fourth century AD during his early years as a bishop, the work reflects on his life and on the acts of remembering and recounting a life.

Thomas More (1478-1535) opposed King Henry VIII's separation from the Catholic Church, and refused to acknowledge Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England. While awaiting execution for refusing to betray his faith, More wrote this fictional dialogue set in 16th century Hungary. The dialogue takes place between a young man, Vincent, and his wise old uncle, Anthony. Vincent fears a Turkish invasion which could force him to either betray his faith or die a martyr.

Henry Shakespear’s book contains gripping accounts of hunting wild animals in India in the mid-19th century, along with supplementary commentary on the breeding and rearing of horses. At that time, the wild beasts of India posed a real threat to villagers as is evident from an 1855/56 report from one district which records 150 deaths caused by bears and tigers. Shakespear provides detailed descriptions based on his personal encounters in chapters like Hog-Hunting, The Man-Eater, Tiger-Shooting, The Panther, The Bear, Bears and Buffalos, Wild Elephants, and The Buffalo and the Bison.
