Washington Irving, the first American writer to make his living by his profession, was born April 3, 1783. At the age of 6, he was introduced to his namesake, George Washington. Benjamin Franklin encouraged him to emigrate to the United States in 1774, where he published a series of pamphlets called The American Crisis.
