His career statistics in both Formula 1 and IndyCar are truly remarkable.

His Formula 1 career consisted of 128 Grand Prix starts, during which he claimed 12 wins, 10 fastest laps, 18 pole positions, and 19 podiums, becoming Formula 1 World Champion in 1978.

Meanwhile, his IndyCar career spanned a staggering 407 races, in which he recorded 52 wins, 65 pole positions, and an incredible 141 podiums, including victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 1969, along with four championships between 1965 and 1984.

He retired from professional racing after competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2000.

In the years since, he has gone on to mentor a number of incredibly talented drivers and has found continued success in the business world.

Some of our younger listeners might also remember him from his memorable cameos in the hit 2006 Pixar film Cars, as well as the 2013 film Turbo.

In 2024, he joined the board of Cadillac and was instrumental in the team’s bid to join the Formula 1 grid.
