Et si notre cowboy solitaire est déjà débordé par les affres du conflit social, c'est sans compter sur les Dalton qui viennent se mêler à la partie.

So auch in Neumünchen, wo die verzweifelten Bewohner den durchreisenden Lucky Luke um Hilfe bitten! Er soll nach Milwaukee reiten und den Streik beenden! Luke nimmt die Herausforderung an und lernt Brauereibesitzer Martz kennen, der unter keinen Umständen auf die Forderungen seiner Arbeiter nach mehr Lohn eingehen will.

Beim Rinderhüten trifft Lucky Luke seinen Freund, den Pechvogel Jack Loser. Er bittet Luke, die Neuankömmlinge in St. Louis abzuholen und sie nach Chelm City in Montana zu bringen. Dabei wird er mit den Sitten und Gebräuchen der gläubigen Juden konfrontiert, die zum Beispiel sein Abendessen – frischer Hasenbraten – verschmähen, weil es nicht koscher ist.

Luke, der nicht im Traum daran denkt, sein Leben als Cowboy aufzugeben, reitet in den Süden, um die Plantage den schwarzen Arbeitern zu überschreiben. Doch mit diesem Plan ist er den anderen Plantagenbesitzern ein Dorn im Auge. Sie, die ihre Arbeiter immer noch wie Sklaven behandeln, wollen an unserem Helden ein Exempel statuieren.
