Inspector Betty Church - one of the few female officers on the force - has arrived from London to fill a vacancy at Sackwater police station. But Betty isn't new here. This is the place she grew up. Time ticks slowly in Sackwater. Having solved the case of the missing buttons, Betty's called to the train station to investigate a missing bench. But though there's no bench, there is a body. December, 1939. Having solved the case of the Suffolk Vampire, Inspector Betty Church and her colleagues at Sackwater Police Station have settled back down to business. There's the elderly Mr Fern, who keeps losing his slippers, Sylvia Satin's 13th birthday party to attend and the scintillating case of the missing bookmark to solve. Though peace and quiet are all well and good, Betty soon finds herself longing for some cold-blooded murder.

During a hospital visit, Lady Violet Thorn overhears a young woman accusing a married couple of her parents' murder and stealing their home, Maccabee House. From body parts scattered around town igniting rumours about a cannibal to a sex worker found brutalised, macabre events soon unfold culminating in Violet receiving a mannequin, resembling herself, stabbed through the heart. With the town of Montford in meltdown, Violet knows that the answers wait at Maccabee House, which lies in the shadow of the old tannery. But with the killer's sights firmly on her, can she make it out alive?

Sidney Grice once had a reputation as London's most perspicacious personal detective. But since his last case led an innocent men to the gallows, business has been light. Listless and depressed, Grice has taken to lying in the bath for hours, emerging in the evenings for a little dry toast and a lot of tea. Usually a voracious reader, he will pick up neither book nor newspaper. He has not even gathered the strength to re-insert his glass eye. His ward, March Middleton, has been left to dine alone.

Il pense que le "sexe faible" n'a pas sa place dans un cabinet de détective, mais il fait tout de même appel à March Middleton, une jeune femme excentrique un peu trop portée sur le gin, pour l'assister. L'irrésistible duo mène l'enquête et découvre que le mystérieux meurtre n'était que le premier d'une sinistre série.
