About this listen

The brilliant Bailey hack recalls some of his most extraordinary cases, including several deliciously funny courtroom spars with his arch-foe, the Mad Bull (aka Judge Roger Bullingham).

Rumpole ages well - the crisp writing, erudite, witty and thought provoking. And the narrator sounds like the characters

This is a great listen thanks to Patrick Tull, who is barely distinguishable from the original, definitive Rumpole (Leo McKern). I recommend seeking out his versions of John Mortimer's classic stories wherever possible. For some reason only two of the Rumpole books that Mr Tull has read are available on Audible UK; another four can be downloaded from Audible's US site, but only if you have access to an American credit card. It would be great if Audible could sort out anomalies like this. The author, publisher and narrator are the same for all six books, so why are some of the titles not permitted to cross the Atlantic?

Patrick Tull is a brilliant Rumpole

The man who reads the book is almost insufferable but suits the ghastly cover drawing. What insufferable prig chose the cover and the reader to, in effect, bury Rumpole?

How appalling I find the reader
